    Background

During 1995-96 the ALRNNV conducted an EdNA funded Information Technology Project from Victoria University of Technology. The outcomes from EdNA project included:

The Information Technology Project proved very successful in initiating the use and development of Internet based communication and learning projects at selected sites. In its second phase during 1996 the project expanded its scope to include ALBE learners and more Internet accounts were made available to take the technology to ALBE classes and experiment their use with adult literacy learners. A full report of the project is available online at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~milledou/vut.htm

The current project aims to build on this previous work and will focus on researching the role of online technologies in ALBE professional development and in classroom learning. The LLTT will provide further opportunities for training and would develop the scope of ALRNNV online services by expanding its Web-based resources and conferencing facilities.

    Aims

The main aim of the project is to research, support and extend appropriate use of online technologies initiated through ALRNNV Information Technology Projects. The LLTT project will focus on researching and documenting the extent and scope of use of online technologies in ALBE classroom practice and in the professional development of ALBE teachers.

    Proposed Activities

    1. Researching and documenting the use of Internet at participating ALBE sites. This would involve case-studies documentation based on List logs, questionnaires, interviews and personal visits to the sites.

    2. Initiating an evaluative research (involving a broader representative sample) in assessing the impact of online technologies on adult literacy practice.

    3. Developing the ALRNNV Website to provide a comprehensive range of information about adult literacy research, seminars, publications and related links.

    4. Organising a series of professional development workshops aimed at enhancing Internet and web development competencies of interested ALBE teachers.

    5. Providing Internet Accounts, modems and necessary training to at least two rural ALBE sites to enable them to access ALRNNV home page and participate in the ALBE mailing lists discussions.

    6. Developing a facility to allow synchronous (real-time) conferencing as well as asynchronous (email like) focus group discussions. The facility will be trialled to assess the potential of online seminars and workshops with adult literacy practitioners.
