Writing a Letter of Request

Edit Checklist
Corrections and changes to what?

If you look at the draft letter provided here, you will see that many of the following things require checking [see the draft letter first]:

  • Spelling: You could use Spell Check on the computer or a dictionary
  • Grammar: Beware of the Grammar Check in Microsoft Word because it is often wrong
  • Tone: Imagine you are the reader, how would you feel if you read this letter? Is this how you want your reader to feel? Does it increase your chances of having your request met?
  • Irrelevant/incomplete/incorrect/false information:
Have you been economical, but informative with your letter? Remember, not too much, not too little! You might like to refer to point 6.1 to remind you of the necessary details.
  • Format/layout: You will probably find that there are many different ways you can format your letter. The style offered here [See an example] is only one example, but is quite commonly used. Check with your teacher which format they want.
