Biography

I am a mathematics education specialist with a love of mathematics and a passion for the development of excellence in mathematics teaching and learning. My career is devoted to teaching and research with teachers and pre-service teachers to ensure that the mathematics education received by students is of the highest quality. I bring to the task a deep understanding of the pedagogy of mathematics teaching and learning, a well researched understanding of professional development issues and a sensitivity to the affective factors for teachers in mathematics education.

Since 1985 I have worked in teacher education and research in mathematics education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both in Australia and overseas. This work has been focussed on teachers and student teachers at early childhood, primary, middle school, secondary and adult levels. Prior to that I taught Mathematics, Science and Computing in Secondary Schools in NSW and Victoria and across all curriculum areas in Primary Schools.

I am currently employed by Victoria University as a lecturer in the School of Education. In this work I am responsible for the Mathematics Education components of the Bachelor of Education, P-12 (B.Ed.) in which there are 1200 pre-service teachers studying on four campuses in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the areas of teacher pre-service and in-service professional development. I am particularly interested in how affective and cognitive factors interact and develop during teachers' careers.

I am also interested in supporting students who struggle in learning mathematics
