The School of Psychology http://www.vu.edu.au/Faculties/Arts/Schools/Psychology
is part of the Faculty of Arts http://www.vu.edu.au/Faculties/Arts.
The staff of the School of Psychology aim to offer the highest quality
education at all levels. Since the introduction of Psychology in
1987, we have moved from the provision of undergraduate degrees,
through graduate diplomas, honours, coursework masters, to research
degrees at the masters and doctoral level. All our offerings have
a focus on people psychology. Thus we are interested in how the
discipline of psychology relates to the real life situations that
people find themselves in. In this sense you may find that our courses
are more applied than at some other universities, and this is part
of our intended orientation.
Almost all of the lecturing staff in this School have worked as
psychologists before joining the university and consequently can
draw on their practical experiences in their teaching and
research.
During our recent re-accreditation by the Australian Psychological
Society we were delighted
some of the panel's comments about our professional programs. They
noted the uniformly
positive endorsement of the programs by our current and past students
and said that in their experience this was very unusual. Secondly,
our programs were highly praised by the external supervisors of
students on practical placements. Indeed, several supervisors volunteered
that overall our students were better prepared for placement than
many students from our
competitor universities. Thirdly, our psychology clinic facilities
were described as probably the
best in Australia.
Another important aspect that we emphasise is trying to personalise
the education we offer.
This means that looking after the needs of our students is a priority
and staff make
themselves available to deal with the academic concerns of students.
Our School has been accredited by the Australian Psychological
Society which means that our courses provide the necessary pathways
to becoming an accredited and registered
psychologist, for those with such a career in mind.
