Projects 2000

Research Project #1: Now Available
The Place of Literacy and Numeracy in the Assessment of Industry Standards
by Linda Wyse and Kath Brewer on behalf of the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Australian Research Consortium, April 2001. Click here to view an executive summary of this report and download the full report in Word format.

Research Project #2
POLICIES AND PEDAGOGIES FOR LIFELONG LITERACY: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
The Victorian centre of ALNARC conducted a review of international trends in adult literacy and numeracy in 2000, with the aim of identifying innovative programs that may be of interest to Australia. The case studies of four different countries, Sweden, the USA, the UK and Spain are therefore contextualised within significant global debates, including a review of renewed interest in the concept of lifelong learning and the findings of the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS). The report concludes that urgent attention is required to develop policies and pedagogies to equip the citizens of Australia with the skills necessary for the 21st Century.

Project 1 – The place of literacy and numeracy in the assessment of industry standards

This year ALNARC is continuing its research into the effects of the inclusion of literacy in training packages. As part of this national project, the Victorian Centre of ALNARC is to carry out a research project into how literacy and numeracy needs are reflected in the assessment of competency standards within training packages.

In particular, the research project will address the following questions:

    1. How are literacy and numeracy issues addressed in the making of assessments?
    2. With respect to individual workers/trainees, to what extent do literacy and/or numeracy needs impact on the successful demonstration of competence at different levels?
    3. What kinds of literacy and numeracy support are provided to workers at the point of assessment?

This project has been sub contracted out to Linda Wyse and Associates who will conduct this research in collaboration with the Victorian co-ordinator and the Victorian Research Advisory Group.
