Exploring ‘Special needs’ and Multiliteracies provision

During 1999-2000 ALNARC adopted a parallel series of investigations into literacy and numeracy delivery in areas beyond the immediate vocational education and training domain. In particular the projects explored provision for groups often identified as having ‘special needs’ for example youth, indigenous populations and women. A further dimension of these investigations in 2000 explored how literacy and numeracy provision could be understood through frameworks of literacy and ‘social practice’ and the notion of ‘multi literacies (following work initiated by The New London Group). These projects provide a varied profile of the range of ways groups access and use literacy and numeracy and offer insights into the relations between formal vocational pathways and other avenues for accessing training and education for citizenship.
