Formatting Reports using Microsoft Word

This series of tutorials will show you how to create a report in Microsoft Word.  It starts by formatting the document in way that will allow you to define and apply advanced features in Microsoft Word so that:

  • your headings have the same appearance throughout your report

  • you can create and update tables of contents

  • and manage page headings and numbers across your report.

 

We suggest you work through the tutorials from the start and use the sample Word file "Greening Salingsburg" for practice.

Lesson 1

The movies in this lesson will show you how to manage your files and prepare your Word document so that you can use powerful features of Word to create your report document:

Word  Introduction:  This movie will show you how to set margins, paper size and fonts.

Moving files with Windows Explorer:  Learn how to use Windows Explorer to manage your files - copy, move and so on.

Preparing your Word document:  You can learn how to set-up and save the tutorial practice document in this movie.

Introducing styles and creating your own 'Normal' style:  This movie shows how to create and save a new style.

 

Lesson 2

In this lesson, you will learn how to create, apply and manage styles for the different headings in your report.  You will also learn about some of the advantages of using styles.

Create a style for the highest level heading  You will learn to create a style based on a style you set in lesson 1 and to control how it looks.

Create styles for other headings:  This movie reviews styles setting to create two levels of sub-headings.

Applying styles:  You will learn how to apply the styles you have created.

Modifying styles:  Learn how make changes once only to change the appearance of a heading throughout your report.
